Week 31 (Due 3/28/2011)

We have looked at Picasso before on this blog, but this week's focus is on a much more linear style that he employed similar to the Igor Stravinsky image we looked at in class.

This piece was painted on a simple off white canvass. Pablo accented her neck through exaggeration its real life beauty and length. Pablo seemed to pick out what he liked most in the women who were his subjects and then exaggerate them in his artworks. One stylistic feature that Pablo used was blue color, and this period of time in his career was aptly called the Blue Period, which was distinctly different from his Rose Period. Later, Pablo began working in Cubism and created many famous pieces in that style. Cubism is “a nonobjective school of painting and sculpture developed in Paris in the early 20th century, characterized by the reduction and fragmentation of natural forms into abstract, often geometric structures usually rendered as a set of discrete planes.” -CW

Every artist’s needs inspiration, something that makes them excited about creating. In Picasso’s case it was love. From all of his meaningful relationships there are over thirty pieces of art that he created which were centered on the current love in his life. In his piece the “Head of a Woman” he based the drawing on his first love Fernande. In the picture you can see a long slender neck; Picasso liked to exaggerate his favorite part of his models. The art work was done on a white canvas and is very simple, but the meaning of the piece goes deeper than just another picture of a girl. -KR

Here are some questions to get you going this week -LS:
1. Did the way Picasso depict the woman in the picture have anything to do with the way her felt about her?

2. In a way this image is quite simple in detail and technique. How can something so simple be so great, epic, famous, or well known?

3. How does this piece symbolize Picasso's relationship with women?

  1. He made most of his pictures of the women he was involved with. He picked his favorite features and made them seem exagerated, which in his own way was showing that he thought, even if it weren't possible, that this was how beautiful she was to him.

This picture got so well known mostly because of the person who created it, and for the fact of him creating it out of love. If someone like myself being unknown made soemthing similiar it wouldn't be so popular, because it can't be exposed to so many people that would already know some of my work or anything like he did.

Picasso put past anything bad about his women, and focused on his favorite features of them. As to people that focus only on the bad features.

  2. It took Picasso a lot of time to draw this picture because he liked her. He wanted to make the picture look almost exactly like Fernande because he cared so much about her. The long neck of the woman is what makes the image memorable. The women in his life would stick around for a long time; therefore, by exaggerating a part of the women he drew, symbolizes the length of time they spent together. I agree with Ry that the image became famous because of who created it.

  3. I agree with Tw3245 that he wanted to make the picture look like her because he liked her.

I also agree with their statement that the long neck makes this picture memorable. It Is one of the things you continue analyzing even after looking at the picture.

  4. Picasso was facinated by women. Picasso liked beautiful women and relationships he had with them and wanted to share their beauty with others. The painting is simple but the long hair and long neck and flowers in the hair make her pretty and not painted on. Sometimes less is best.
I agree with Ry and Tw3245 that the image became famous because of who created it.

  5. I also think this picture also shows that his relationship with her was simple and not complicated. He painted all different kinds of women based on where he was in his life and what was going on.

  6. This is the greaaaaaat picture!!!
I think Picasso would knew and liked this girl that's why he drew her picture. And he also showed that he liked her long neck.

I disagree with many people that this painting is famous because he drew it. It's just one factor but this picture also made itself famous too. I think this picture is very simple but interesting.
I like the simple picture like this, it looks so special. I think maybe the drawings that have too much details look so boring!

In my opinion, Picasso liked her so much and tried to make this picture so beautiful to tell everybody how beautiful Fernande was!

  7. I agree with ds3112 that this picture shows that his relationship with her was simple and not complicated. That's maybe the reason he made it so simple.

  8. It's sure that Picasso must like this woman a lot so he painted her.

This picture is so simple but so beautiful.
It's amazing how he made this looks so simple while it looks so great!
Maybe because he puts his love about this woman into the picture.

I guess the relationship would be Picasso liked her.

  9. The way Picasso depict the woman in the picture has to do with the way he felt about her.
She looks beautiful with the flowers in her hair and I think she was very special for him.
Maybe they were in a relationship or just good friends.

Picasso was one of the first artists who created images that are quite simple in detail and technique but at the same time great and famous! He put his love and his feelings for this woman in this image.

He put the focus on her hair, her eyes and her lips. This are the parts he loves so much on her. He was drawing her as if she would be perfect, but for him she is perfect and beautiful.

  14. the neck of the girl symbolizes that picasso spent so much time with the girl by how long he made the neck of the girl. See Picasso liked the women so it took him forever to draw it becasue he wanted it to be perfect. He didnt want the drawing to be ugly because that was just not the way the girl was. In his eye she was beautiful. Personally i think the only reason that this painting is so famous is because of the story it hold within it not just because of who drew it. So in that case i disagree with Ry and Tw3245

  15. He probably drew the women, because they were the most important part of his live and he wanted to capture their beauty. By doing so, he tended to draw what he liked the most, and he also drew it a little bit bigger/wider. Like in this picture, you not only see that the neck is pretty long, but also her hair is very thick and her eyes kind of big.
I love this picture though, because the face is really pretty and even without details, it still looks real.
He must have loved his women, because otherwise he wouldn’t take the time and draw a picture of them. And from the way he concentrated on the beautiful things on women, I assume that he was a respectful lover. It was also a smart step to draw his love ones, because I bet that the women appreciated that and felt honored.

And I agree with ds3112 that Picasso was facinated by women.

  16. Yes, it did have things to do with the way he felt about her. The piece is well known because of the person who drew/created it. I agree with ds3112 on how the piece symbolizes Picasso’s relationship with women by showing how they were simple and not complicated.

  17. He exagerated the parts of her that he found most beautiful which showed that he loved her. I agree with Ry that this was probably mostly famous because Picasso made it and it reached a large number of people. I also agree that he went past their bad characteristics and focused on their good ones.

  18. Picasso made his pictures of women that he was with. He liked to make the pictures very unique and interesting looking more exaggerative than anything i would say. But that was also his way of showing how beautiful that certain one women was to him. He wanted to explain in his pictures her beauty and what she meant to him, by how exaggerative he was. Because, it was known that Picasso was the artist of this wonderful piece of artwork, it was more widely known just for that fact that he drew it, and i believe that it was also known because of the feelings he put towards this painting. He made it out of love and i think that affected many people in a positive manner. In picassos art, he liked to pick out the certain things about the women he was with that he enjoyed and liked most, then he put those feelings into art.

I agree with ML3216 when they said, that picasso drew the women because they were the most important part of his life and he wanted to capture their beauty.
