Week 29 (Due 3/14/2011)

Käthe Kollwitz, Kindersterben from 1925.

Being able to understand the way someone else feels is called empathy. The reason we grow sad when we hear about people dying is because it causes us to think about people that are close to us dying. Käthe was able to make everyone feel empathy through her art piece called Kindersterben which literally means children dying in English. Käthe’s art portrayed many things that happened during the Holocaust. Kindersterben depicts a man holding a small child’s casket, and it can be assumed that the child was killed in a Nazi camp. The piece is very strong and caught the attention of many people including the Nazis that 'harassed' her for creating it. -CW

To answer the following questions, some basic research will be required, have fun! -LS
1. What type of impact did World War I have on Kollwitz's artwork. Was it a positive effect or negative?

2. If Kollwitz had not gone through the struggles and hard times in her life do you think her art work would still have been as great?

3. Why are so many of Kollwitz's pieces of art dark and eerie?

  1. World War I had a lot of impact on her work. A lot of her work was inspired by the emotions running through peoples during these times. Most of them sad and angry because of the terrible scenes of death and dying that were being seen daily.

Her work would have been great either way. She just would have had some other inspiration behind her art than the emotions of World War I and what she was alive for of World War II.

The reason they are dark and eerie is because they show sad emotions, and times of anger grief and war that consumed most of the world at that time. The charactoristic of dark and eerie comes because of what emotions and settig she was showing.

  2. The World War I had the most important part of impact on her work. Her wor shows the emotions from the people who lived during these times.
There are sad, because they lost a family members, their home. A lot of people lost everything. At the same time they are also angry, because of the people, who did this to them.

I don't think that her art works would still have been as great, because her works are about the struggles she had gone through. Her art works gave her maybe power to process the horrible things.

The dark colors and the way she draw the conturs ( errie ) show the sadness and the rage that the most people felt at that time.
Lightful colors would make the picture happy, but it is anything but not happy.

  3. I agree with Ry that most of them are sad and angry, because of the terrible scenes of death and dying that were being seen daily.

And I also agree with Ry that the charactoristic of dark and eerie comes because of what emotions and settig she was showing.

  4. I disagree with Annika about the greatness of her work if she wouldn't have been through what she did. She still would have had wonderful work just of a different subject.

I agree with Annika on the way she drew this and the way she made it eerie showed the emotions of this time.

  5. The art work and both a possitive and a negative effect on her work. In a possitive way becasue it helped her paint and her painting and it was a master peice but a negative becasue it was a sad time in her life. This artwork made her feel sad in this life. She is an artist all of her artwork would have been great she wouldnt have needed just the sad times in her life. They are dark and eerie because she thought about the dark and terrible time in her life.

  6. Worl war 1 had a lot of impact. There were lots of peoples family or family members that had died in it which had a lot of impact on them. Yes her art work would still be as intelligent just maybe a little bit of a different background and not so much emotion running through her. Because of what happend in the wars they were dark and eerie for those who lost a family member and made them emotional which would describe her art work

  7. WWI had a positive effect on Kollwitz’s art because it made her work more influential. It was also positive because it made her work more personal to her and in return to others as well. If Kollwitz had not gone through all that she had her art would not be as great. She probably made them dark and eerie so that whoever looks at her work feels the emotions that she felt when she created her artwork, she wanted people to feel mad and sad about what was happening in the world at that time. I agree with ar3292 that the anger that is seen in the artwork is the anger the people felt towards those that were carrying out the horrible things that were happening.

  8. WW1 was positive because her art work should the feelings of the time. I dont think she would be able to draw or paint the sad images if she didnt go through the same experiences because she wouldnt know how they really felt and pain they went through.
The dark pictures made them seem sad and depressing.
I agree with Annika and Ry on the way she drew this and the way she made it eerie showed the emotions of this time.

  9. World War was impact on her work. Her work showed about peoples during ww1. It was a sad time in her life.
Her work would have been great.
The reason they are dark and eerie because she wanted to show sad emotion what happened and what terrible time in her life.

i agree with chasehofer that There were lots of peoples family or family members that had died in it which had a lot of impact on them

  10. Of cause was her experience about people (or especially children) dying not good, but maybe that made her stronger and made her realize that we better enjoy our life and our time on earth, because it is not always good and it ends some when. So for me it would be both, good and bad.
If she had not gone through that entire struggle, her artwork would still be great, just because it really catches my eyes. It is so dark and sad and almost scary. But I am not a hundred percent sure if she would be able to create such feelings without feeling that way.
The darkness is probably in many of her pieces, because black is the color of death, like on funeral everybody wears black. So we associate that color with sadness and many with scariness, the scariness of death.

And I agree with Ry and that her work would have been great either way. She just would have had some other inspiration behind her art than the emotions of World War I and what she was alive for of World War II.

  11. WWI impacted her in boh positive and negative way.
The positive way is it made her paintings look so strong and emotional. WWI inspired her artworks. But the negative thing is she was unhappy with the war. She lost one of her two sons in WWI.

I think her hard times in her childhood is one of a factor that made her artworks look so emotional and strong because she did passed the hard times by herself so she knows how it feels. And maybe because she had a hard times so she became an artist to share her feelings.

It's all dark because she wants to show the sadness and death. Black and white is the best colors to use. If they're colorful, the wouldn't look sad.
I think they're also look scary but I still think they're awesome

  12. I agree with Milk that WWI impacted on her works and it's the sad time of her life.

I disagree with Ry that she would have had some other inspiration behind her art than the emotions of World War I and all herhard times. I looked at all her artworks and they look so special because they all are sad. I don't think her works would be as good as these if she didn't have a hard time in her childhood or in the war.

  13. WWI impacted her work in positive way. because it made her picture looked realistic. she've had bad in the past time. it will not look good if she didnt have that time because her work came from her real feeling. she used back and white colors on her work becuase she wanted to show sadless.

i agree with praewa that she had hard time in her childhood that made her and looked emotional

  14. WWI had a positive effect on her artwork. The death of her son in the war added to the emotion in her work. I don't think her artwork would have been as great if she had no been exposed to the struggles and hardships she had seen in her lifetime that added to the work she created. I agree with Ry that her pieces are dark to show the sadness and grief associated with the artworks.

  15. World War I had great impact on her artwork from all the emotions everyone was going through. The emotions were mainly angriness and sadness from all of the people who were suffering. I agree with Ry on how it would have been great either way and how she would just have a different meaning behind it other than the emotions of World War I. So many of Kollwitz’s pieces of art are dark and eerie because she wants to show all the sadness and other emotions they went through.

  16. It was positive because it gave her the inspiration to create her art, but it was negative because of all the bad things that happened during that time.
Her artwork would have been great either way but it would probably be less sad and maybe have less emotion.
The war was going on which brought sad time and Kollwitz’s reflected those emotions into her drawings

  17. World War I, had a huge impact on her work, i would say that it was most positive because it showed her the way to creating her artistic abilities to create such beautiful art. But it was also somewhat negative because nobody deserves to have to go through something like war. It affects you in a way that is unexplainable to others and sticks with you for a lifetime. I believe that her artwork is beautiful and very unique and interesting, it shows so many emotions and feelings that alot of people have to actually look into to understand thats why it makes her artwork so significant. Granted if she hadnt gone through all of her struggles there probably wouldnt be so much heartache and depressed emotions in her work, but thats what intrigues people to look into her art. So many of her pieces of art are so dark and eeris because of the era at that certain time. Since there was so much hurt and anger in the air and so many things that she had to expierience in a negative way it made her spill out her emotions onto paper to show everyone what she went through.

-I agree with Ry, when she mentioned that Kathes artwork was based on the feelings and emotions running through people around her.

  18. It could have been both a positive effect or a negative. I know I say that for every blog that asks that, but I look at it in two different ways, which then shows me that it could be both ways, just depending on how you look at it all. World War I was a hard time, but it being such a hard time it influenced her work more so, to where you could feel the same way others would just by looking at it. I think that its positive that way, as her art works make others feel the way they did in those times. It was also a negitive, because so many people died, and thats how her art was based on. It was mainly based on how they felt.
I could have been just as good, you would never know because that was the only way that she had felt things. If she didn't feel this way, or her life was different, her drawings would be different too. You or I will never know. If she has the ability to draw and feel the way she does about these pieces of art, then maybe she would have still been very good at drawing. Like I said though we will never know.
The reason that most if not all of her drawings are dark and eerie, is beacuse they reflect the sad emotions of what people have seen and how they have feeled. They are eerie too maybe to show that they felt that there life was being shut down, and htey they felt like they were feeling dark, and sad for what they had lost.
