Week 22 (Due 1/24/11)

This is a piece of street art titled No Future, and created by the artist known as Banksy.

Banksy is a street artist who does graffiti all over London. He’s famous for artworks that are done on the sides of buildings including private property. But this creates a problem because he is defacing public property, which is illegal and no one really knows who Banksy is. A lot of his messages comprise of a funny image with a slogan. He isn’t a thug, but a real artist who likes to have his art shown in an illegal way. KR

While some of his pieces confront serious social problems with humor, other pieces are quite serious; such as the “No Future” piece. This piece was painted in Bevious Valley a place in Southampton. This area has a reputation for wild parties, and binge-drinking. This piece signifies that the hope for a promising future for anyone in the area is not very good, especially the younger generation. LS

Style in art is the way someone expresses themselves through different art-creating techniques. Banksy’s style is obviously graffiti, but not the gangster, disrespectful graffiti you see illegally sprayed all over the big cities. Banksy, believe it or not, has the go-ahead to express himself on almost any wall, building, or ally way in most of London. Still, Banksy’s style has meaning and is more conservative than most graffiti. CW

Your questions for this week are:

1. Does the image convey deep feeling(s), and if so what is it or what are they?
2. Does Banksy's anonimity contribute to or detract from the quality of his works?
3. How is Banksy's work different from typical graffiti?
4. Is Banksy’s work worth anything, and if so what?

  1. This image does convery deep feelings. The artists feeling of remorse and sadness that the new generation of people are getting more into drugs and partying and messing up their lives.

It doesn't detract from his work in anyway, but in some cases it doesn't contribute anything either. It makes it to where his art is mysterious, but also to where he won't get stopped from doing it.

Banksy's art is both similar and different. Unlike some "typical" graffiti, his is conveying his want for something bigger than himself. It says that people do care what happens with the future generation, and he is trying to show them this. But not all people with the "typical" graffiti style are just trying to vandilize things, and are also trying to convey something.

His work may not be worth any money, but it is worth the work. It is worth the thought and the fact that someone cares. His doing this could change the lives of some teens and young adults for the better, and show them that they need to turn their life around.

  2. that was the most insane drawing ever the feeling and thought that the person has to draw that is bad. So i would agree with what ry has to say about the feeling and sadness.

  3. goodgrade,
I don't understand what your post says. What is insane about the work? What makes you feel that Banksy’s thoughts or feelings are bad?

  4. I really feel sorry if I see this painting. The girl look dissatisfied and grumpy, not even the balloon makes her happy. She looks real and face expression is convincing.
I guess that the quality does not depend on his anonymity. Nobody knows him, so he has no pressure to create something new or to quit it. He also can live his normal life to earn money or something like that. And people like me get excited when they don’t know who made that and who like all the mystery about it.
It is different, because most of his graffiti’s are funny and real life looking. Most of them are just black and one color (red for example).
I think that is worth a lot, because he is kind of the voice of the city, he draws what people think and this is a good way show the government what is going on. And because it’s illegal, they have to look at it and hopefully start thinking about it.
And I like Ry’s thought: His work may not be worth any money, but it is worth the work. True!

  5. I agreew ith ML3216 that the girl in the painting doesn't even look happy, and i would as well feel sorry if I saw this painting.

I also agree that the anonimity is what makes everyday people excited. The mystery of the art is intriguing.

  6. The painting does convey feelings. It shows a young child sitting on the street holding a balloon that is tied into the words “no future.” It tells that the child will grow up in an area that does not show much hope of any child having a bright future. The area is full of drunks and partiers and the children will grow up in that environment and learn from the older kids that drinking is okay. Banksy is trying to get people’s attention by telling them that children should not grow up in that way.The fact that no one truly knows about Banksy other than his close and personal assistants makes his artwork more appealing. More people pay attention to his art because it is mysterious which makes his more famous than a typical graffiti artist. Typical graffiti stems from gangs and most graffiti tags are gang symbols and signs or names. Most graffiti does not have a hidden meaning to it. Banksy’s graffiti to me is art, it may be illegal but it is representing important issues that matter. He doesn’t create graffiti just to do it he does it to get people’s attention and make them think. Banksy’s paintings are definitely worth something, many famous people have purchased them for quite high prices.
I agree that the child looks unhappy.

  7. Looking at the artwork makes me feel sad because the e boy may have no future because of where he comes from. It also makes me feel upset that he no shoes because the money may be going to other things. I think not knowing who Banksy is makes his artwork more interesting. Traditional graffiti is more colorful than Banksy’s, and the lines are more all over the place than his as well. The traditional graffiti may also have more meaning than Banksy’s. I think Banksy’s work is worth something. I think he should get some money for his work, maybe not a lot but a little. I agree with JP3134 when he said children shouldn’t have to grow up in an environment where there are drugs, parties, and drinking.

  8. I think this piece of art is very full of feelings. The artist was very sad about what people were doing in that neighborhood. Drinking themselves to nothing causes their future and their children's future to be in jeapordy. Those people need to realize that their children need them and their continuous drinking isn't helping their children or themselves.

Banksy's anonimity really adds to this piece because it makes it mysterious because no one knows who Banksy really is. He or she has done all of this artwork on public property without getting caught.

Banksy's work is very different from typical graffiti bacause it has a message for the people of that neighborhood. It isn't negative, its positive.

I would say its worth something because of the fact that no one knows who the artist is and the art is very meaningful.

  9. The drawing has very deep feelings. The fellings that are shown are sadness. He feels sadness the next generation who don't have an option of living in that dump. The little girl looks poor and sad.

I think it does detract from his work because if he wouldn't do it illegaly it would have more impact on people and they wouldn't think of him as a criminal.

His work is different because typical graffiti is abnoxious. His artwork has meaning to it, even though he does it illegaly.

I think its worth a lot because he does it for the people and not for the money. He shows people how people live in parts of hampshire.

I disagree with Tw3245 because it does have meaning and its not abnoxious like graffiti.

  10. I agree with Tw3245 because this artwork does show that the children of that area don't have a positive future because of where they grew up and what their parents do.

  11. The art work shows lots of meaning. The kid shows sadness and depression. His work isnt graffiti because he has a reason or lesson to people. Graffiti is vandelism. His art work is illegal but it makes people think about what the art means. I agree with JP3134 when he said children shouldn’t have to grow up where there are drugs, parties, and drinking.

  12. I think this image with the words " NO FUTURE " and the little child convey deep feelings.

This painting is very sad. The two words and the facial expression of the child declare this sadness.

Banksy's anonimity doesen't contribute and also doesn't detract from the quality of his works.
He is right with his statement that there is no future for the next generations and the most people know that this is true. Banksy convey his own opinion with this work and I think it is good that nobody know who paint it because this makes it mysterious.

It is different from typical graffiti, because the most are just gang symbols and signs or names and don't transfer feelings.

I think Banksy’s work is worth anything, because it is meaningsful and the fact that nobody know you the artist of this work is makes this painting more worth.

  13. I agree with ds3112 that graffiti is vandelism and banksy's works have meanings and are not graffiti.

I also agree with JP3134 that children shouldn’t have to grow up in an environment where there are drugs, parties, and drinking.

  14. she looks sad. i think when the artists drew this pic he feels sadness. it may b have detract to child. It is different because most of graffiti’s are real life looking but this one it says no future he wants to tell something in the situation. his work is worth sometimes he doesn't get a lot of money but when people saw it. they will look at future what they gonna do, think and do it better.

  16. The image does convey deep feelings. It conveys hopelessness and despair and maybe even anger. It is almost a call for help. I agree with Ry, Banksy’s anonymity contributes an air of mystery to his works. His work is different from typical graffiti because it tries to convey a message rather than most graffiti. His art work is worth our time and our thought.

  17. the girl in this pic look sad and wanna cry.
the artist want to show what are you doning now and what about in your future. Banksy's work is very different from typical graffiti bacause this pic it show about text more than the girl.
this pic is worth so people who sae this pic they will think about future.

i agree with JP3134 that children look unhappy

  19. I think that this is a beautiful piece of work, it conveys alot of different kinds of feelings. I think that if we were to bring someone thats having a hard time in life, and doesnt realize what they have in life, and showed them this picture they could see that life could be alot harder and that they should count their blessings. Many children these days are neglected and forgotton. I personally believe that this is one of the most horrible things to put a child through becuase they dont deserve it and they dont understand. This little child in this painting looks very upset, scared, and confused. Im sure it feels forgotton and unloved. Since this child has no support or protection i think that the balloon is a sense of security, since they have no secure place to go to. I dont think that it detracts from his work at all, i think that it is so mysterious and is full of meaning and thoughts that it doesnt get in the way of him being able to do this kind of artwork. Banksys work is different from typical graffiti because most graffiti really has no meaning to it, most do it just to rebel and its mainly just words that mean nothing to society. Where as this type of graffiti has meaning to it, and actually makes people think about how they should take the little things for granted and think about how lucky they really are that their not left on the streets. I most definatly think that banksys work is worth alot, this is because it shoes people a differnet aspect of life and that life could get alot worse and that they should never give up....it worth someones life that he could very easily change.

  20. I agree with ar3292 because the title of the picture has alot of meaning just as that, it conveys very deep feelings. And really makes you think.

  21. Many feelings are conjured up from this painting, it’s a certain sadness and the words just add to it and almost make it unbearable to think about what kind of future this young girl might have.
His anonymity neither contributes nor detracts from the quality of the painting, but I would say it makes me try to figure out what he is thinking. Banksy doesn’t just spray words on a wall or train cart, he puts more thought into his art. He puts a deeper meaning to the word graffiti.
People obviously think his work is valuable because they put it in art museums and they also action buildings or walls off with his art work on them.

  22. I would say it does convey deep fellings, he is trying to show others what could happen in the future. The "No Future" above the little girl, in my opion, is trying to show that in the future things that used to make us happy and entertain us when we were young won't be the same. With the balloon the girl still looks sad, she has it but doesn't really care because she's not happy with it.
I would say it does both, because it does detract, because some people don't know who is doing the amazing works of art, but yet it still contributes to him, because, even htough his work is good it is still illegal to do, so it helps him in some way.
I woulnd't say his work is different from other graffiti, mostly because all graffiti is illegal. But for the most part it is different, it actually shows feelings, and means something, other than the "typical" graffiti where you only put your name on a train. This is trying to show that even though all graffiti work is illegal, everybodies has something to say, or their is a meaning to why they put it to where it is, or even what it says.

    4. Is Banksy’s work worth anything, and if so what?
I wouldn't say that it is worth money, even though they are, in my opinion, amazing works of art; but they are worth the work, and worth the time. His works of art are worth many words, they show much feeling.

  23. I would have to agree with Ry. She makes a point when she says that, "His doings could change live of soem teens and young adults for the better." Becasue they project a feeling that everybody might be feeling at any age.

  24. Yes, the image does convey deep feelings. The feelings in this are very sad. I think that it is contributing from the quality of his works because all the excitement is about not knowing who did it. It probably wouldn’t mean as much if they knew who it was.
Banksy’s work is different because he is trying to tell the world something unlike typical graffiti. I agree with Ry on how this may not be worth any money, but the thought and the fact that someone cares does count.
