Week 13 (due 11/22/2010)

In the 1980s, Charles Biederman reached the zenith of his artistic career when he created a series of masterpieces much like the one represented here. His work is based on nature, with careful considerations toward physics and constructionism. To create his artwork, Biederman would spend hours in nature taking notes on what he saw. He would take those notes and create hundreds of drawings based on them, then would pick one or two of those drawings to make scale models from. Biederman’s high relief sculptures rarely included more than five or six colors and consisted of basic geometric shapes that he arranged organically. For Biederman, his work was an extension of himself, and as such he never compromised his own or his art's integrity. He would not sell in galleries or associate himself with people that did not share his passion for nature and devotion to artistic integrity.

Your job this week is to dissect Biederman’s work in terms of the elements and principles of visual art. Explain how he used line, shape, color, texture, value, space, and form. Then explain how he arranged those elements to create balance, rhythm, pattern, contrast, unity, emphasis, and movement. (Hint: for definitions of any of these elements/principles you only have to look to the posters in the room) Since we have not yet discussed the principles of unity, emphasis, contrast, or movement, the appropriate inclusion of these concepts in your discussion will be considered for extra credit.

Alternately or additionally, you may discuss the similarities and differences between Biederman's process of creating high relief sculptures to your process of creating a low relief sculpture. This discussion must also have a focus on the elements and principles of visual art.

  1. Biederman's work is definitley one of a kind. He uses basic geometric shapes to create his sculptures.

He only used a few colors in his work, which made his work even more interesting. He also incorporated value with only those few colors.

He uses shapes with edges and vertices, which make the texture smooth and pointy. He has a balance on this work that is more centered.

  2. Biederman used the background-color red.
He also used the colors yellow, green and blue.

The shapetexture of his work is geometric.
This added complexity factor and attention.

His work has three parts. This gives balance.

He used different combinations of his figures.
This makes his artwork more interesting.

  3. When sitting and studying nature for hours on end I am sure that there are a lot of ideas you could get. I think it's great how he put in value while using lines and shapes to sometimes create a vibrant camouflage or interesting and unsettling pictures. The parts go together and seem to be based from the center, giving them balance and making his art balanced and beautiful.

  4. I agree with Nelson, sitting for hours on end in nature would definitly give you more than one idea. I also agree with him that his art is balanced and beautiful.

I agree with Anni that his shape combination made his are very interesting.

  5. I agree with Nelson that his art work is beautiful (,because of the colorscheme and the shape combination).

I agree with Ry that the shapes with edges and vertices make the texture smooth and pointy.

  6. He used geometric shapes which created the shape and line. The different size in the shapes created space and form. He created value by using different color shapes which also creates contrast. There is form because it has volume and mass. HE follows aa pattern so that creates balance and I agree with Nelson on you can study nature for hours and come up with some really good ideas.

    but different size and color.
His artwork look very interesting and balance.

  9. I agree with Ry and m.milk-plus that the shapes with edges and vertices make the texture smooth and pointy.
He used red to make the art stand out with the other colors reflecting off the bright red. The art is pops out.

  10. the difinete shape of the three dimensional. but the modernist has made the best shapes that are the fine dimensions of fine art. but the constructionism of this guy is amazing.i agree with ry says because the nature is like definetly shaped with in one spot.

  11. Biederman, used mainly prime colors and compliment colors on his art work in this picture. He was considered one of the ‘Best unknown artists in America’ in the twentieth century. Preferring his privacy, he decided to move into isolation where he devoted entirely into doing art. He went from drawing on old flour sacks, all the way to having in 1976, over 250 pieces of art on display and most of them being 3-D art. He insisted nature wasn’t a closed system, but a rather dynamic, open-ended, and creative; which an artist must strive to reveal. He used many different shapes and colors to make his work different than anybody elses. He loved the nature, and that’s what inspired him the most to exceed on producing such different and good artwork.

  12. Biederman’s work would have been hard to do or copy. He probably would have spent a lot of time completing this artwork. High relief sculptures would require more time and thought to complete than low relief sculptures would take. He used different shapes of different colors to make it more interesting. He used different colors that contrast each other yet also go together.
I agree with Nelson that since to is in the center it is balanced.

  13. He used geometric shapes to created the shape and line but it different size in the shapes to created space and form. His artwork look amazing because he created the shape and line to different size but why the picture are balance.

i agree with milk and ar3292 that his artwork gives balance and look interesting

  14. Biederman uses a lot of shapes and overlapping to create dimension in his works. He uses 3-D style and a large range of colors that are not in the same color group.

  16. Biederman's work is very simple. He uses basic shapes, colors, and designs. The time he takes to create these looks slim, however. It may take more time to create these than meets the eye. He has specific spots to where he places his designs. The same shapes are in the same spots and look alike. Just at a different view. But, I do think that everything in this drawing is balanced and equal.

  17. He used color, mostly red, blue, yellow and green. The colors are pretty bright and always the same red, the same blue, etc. in one artwork. His shapes are rectangles, but the built something more like triangles. So he also makes contrasts. The texture of the little pieces is always the same, as well as the value. He also created space, it seems like the singles pieces are spread out to the sides and getting smaller.
The whole artwork has a balance in the middle of the wall, but I cannot see a repeating pattern. The rhythm is probably not that fast, because the single pieces are not that close together (of cause, where the pieces are close together, the rhythm would be fast(er)).
During his active phase, his sculptures are looking very similar in using colors, shape, textures, contrast and balance.

And I aree with ar3292, that This added complexity factor and attention.

  18. His colors are red, yellow, blue, green, and purple. His texture and shape are both geometric and box like. He uses a lot of form by how his shapes over lap the way they do. His space is the red background. His values are the change in colors. I don't think I like this artist because i don't relate to how he was trying to create art from his eyes. It doesn't really tell me anything so im sort of detached from wanting to go more indepth on researching him.

  19. He used a geometric shapes to make this amazing artwork.
He used red for the background and used the cold colors for the pieces to make the contrast.
And this balance of the pictures is that everything are in the middle.
I think it looks like the art work that I just finished.

  20. I agree with ar3292 that the work has three parts also give this work balance.
And the different combinations make this artwork more interesting.

  21. In his sculptures he uses geometric shapes to create balance, rhythm, pattern, contrast, unity, emphasis, and movement. Just by having the shapes in certain spots he created rhythm, pattern, and balance. And buy having different shapes and colors that don’t fit, he created contrast.
I agree with Nelson on how making the sculpture based from the center makes it beautiful.

  23. He used line and shape by using geometric figures. He used few colors and also incorporated values in those colors which make those few colors look like many. The shadows cast by the shapes give a smooth texture.I agree with Ry that the edges and vertices also make it seem pointy. The shapes come out of the background giving it space and the shapes are three dimensional, giving it form. The work is almost symetrical giving it balance but it is not quite symetrical because it has contrast. The shapes are also arranged in a pattern on the sides, bottom and center.
