Week 12 (due 11/15/2010)

In 1971, Blue Ribbon Sports (BRS) was looking for a new logo for a particular brand of shoe they were readying to introduce. So, the accountant for BRS hired Carolyn Davidson, a graphic design student at Portland State University to come up with some ideas for their brand. Davidson charged BRS $2 an hour for her work, and the total bill for the logo design came to $35.

The logo that Davidson created is representational, which means that it is not a random shape. It is actually symbolic for something(s). Your task this week is to discover the meaning(s) behind the symbol. Find out if Davidson was appropriately compensated for her efforts, and decide if you think she was. Finally, think of any other logos that can stand alone for their companies and defend your idea with objective statements.

The Nike logo is a registered trademark of Nike. Use of the logo here

  1. The symbol is supposed to represent the wing of the Greek Goddess. The goddess is substentialy "Nike" the goddess of Victory. The logo is also sometimes said to be an abstract wing of sorts.

I think only $35 was to small, but she also got an envelope filled with stock, and a golden swoosh ring.

McDonald's arch, Pepsi logo, and the Coca Cola logo are some of the other ones that stand alone for their companies.

  2. The company gets its name from a greek goddess of victory, which is Nike. I agree with Ry that her compensation was too small. She should have earneed more. Adidas logo, Harley Davidson logo, and the Lamborghini all have logos that can stand alone for their companies. They are very strong logos and everyone knows them when they see them.

  5. i agree with Linday that the Harley Davidson, Lamborghini, and adidas logo's can all stand on their own.

I agree with good grade to a point, i find that ithe swoosh is used for a lot of things but it is most known for Nike and was originally their design.

  6. According to Greek mythology Nike is the goddess of victory, with that Davidson used this concept to portray the wings of the Greek goddess and produced the "swoosh" symbol. I think $35 was a small sum for her work, especially because the company has gotten so greatly known. Another would be the Under Armour symbol.

  7. The Nike swoosh represents the wings of the goddess Nike. Who is the goddess of victory. Therefore, it can also be a cry for victory on the sport’s battlefield. Davidson was compensated for work her work because she received $35 as well as Nike stock and a gold swoosh ring. The McDonald’s golden arches are a symbol that stands alone. They stand alone because everyone knows what they when they see them. The arches stand for the ‘m’ in McDonald’s. The UnderArmour symbol also stands alone because it is on a lot of things by itself. When you see it, you know exactly what it is for. I disagree with everyone that she wasn’t compensated well for her work because if you think about it, stock in Nike now would be worth more than any amount of money would have been back in the 1970’s.

Another logo would be the Under Armour symbol.

  11. Nike is the name of the Greek Goddess of victory. The nike sign stands for the goddess's wings which is "swoosh". $35 isn't anything compared to what nike has made so far. Nike is a company that is probably recognized all over the world. Some other logos that are set alone for their companies would be Pepsi, Toyota, McDonals.

  12. I agree with KK3138. $35 is just way to little amount.

  13. It represents the wing of the Greek Goddess NIKE. She billed the company $35 and got a ring and stock later from the owner. Some other logos are the golden arches for McDonalds and Under Armour symbol.

I agree with TW3245 that she was compensated for her work cause the stock is worth more than a one time payment.

  14. The logo symbolizes the wing of the greek goddess nike, Goddess of victory. She was compensated with $35, Nike stock, and a gold ring. I think she was compensated fairly. The stock is probably worth quite a bit now. I agree with Ry, the McDonalds, Pepsi, and Coca-cola logos stand alone for their companies.

  15. Blue Ribbon Sports changed their name to Nike, because that is the Greek name for the goddess of victory and the shoes (their first products) should exactly represent and bring that victory. So the heads of Nike chose the checkmark likely looking “Swoosh”, which stands for the wing of the goddess.
I think that the $ 35 is ridiculous, but the chairmen also gave a diamond-ring to her, with the Swoosh on the top, and that was a nice gesture.
Another popular logo is the Adidas logo, it’s like a triangle, made of three thick bars, which are getting smaller from the left to the right. And the logo is mostly black and on sport equipment.

And I agree with Ry and the Pepsi logo.

  21. The Nike Logo is to represent the Greek goddess of Victory. I would think that she'd get more money for creating this logo but maybe back then they wouldn't care so much because it wasn't as big of a company as it is now. I think she should have had been given a bigger paycheck. McDonalds, Adio, Vans, Pepsi, Mountain Dew, iPod Apple.. there are very many companies with logos of their own.

  22. The logo represents a Greek goddess of victory. If anything she was over compensated, her original amount was thirty-five dollars which she recieved. Then after the company went big they gave her a diamond ring and a nike stock. So she isn't complaining about not being compensated. I think it stands out like a logo should, when you think about a company or a brand you think of the name and also the logo and most of the time you just see the logo. So it should have a lot of meaning instead of just being a shape. Like DCshoes, they have the DC symbol that stands out from other companies and is noticed.

  23. The meaning behind this symbol is Nike, which is the Greek Goddess of victory. I agree with Ry and Lindsay on how $35 is not very much and maybe the designer should have earned more money.
Dairy Queen, Oreo, Pizza Hut, Subway, Dell, IKEA, KFC, Apple, and many more are logos that stand for their own companies.

  24. The swoosh represents the wing of the greek goddes nike. Nike is the goddess of victory. I think that she should have been compensated a lot more after the swoosh had such a great impact on the company. You'd think that since the company ended up making so much money, they would pay her a lot more. Other companies that are represented by their logo are apple, google, and mcdonalds.

  25. The logo represents the wing of the greek goddess nike. The goddess nike is the goddess of victory and i think that she should have got paid alot more for the hard work and effort she put into it. Now days the nike logo is very forunate and widely known. So with that said she should've got more credit for it. Other logos that are widely known are, apple, google, and verizon.

  26. I agree with krissie i think that logos should also have a meaning and not just be a shape that needs to be noticed. If there was no meaning to a logo then it wouldnt be as noticed and people wouildnt be as attracted to it as if it had a meaning.

  27. The logo represents to sign of the Greek goddess of victory. I do not think that Davidson was appropriately compensated because the logo turned out to be an extreme success. I agree with Tw3245 that the under armour symbol would count as one that stands alone because it is on so many things and everyone knows what it is when they see it.
