Week 26 (Due 2/21/11)

Your post this week is on the photography of Eliana Aponte.

Colombian native Eliana Aponte started her highly successful photography career in 1993 after attaining her communication and journalism degree at the university Externado de Colombia. Eliana wasn’t afraid to take on controversial photography projects. She started out photographing for Reuters. Reuters is a United Kingdom news and market data website that provides information to newspapers around the world. Some of the projects that she photographed for Reuters include: Israeli- Palestinian conflict, Lebanon-Israel war, Iraq war, Colombia’s conflict, Haiti 2004 political crisis, Haiti earthquake, illegal Mexican migration to the United State, and the Athens Summer Olympics. After twelve years of photographing for Reuters, Eliana moved to Haiti. -LS

There are many different types of photography. This week we look at Eliana Aponte’s Immigration photo. Eliana made this photo and many others a part of one huge immigration project she did in 2010. Eliana wanted to capture immigrants’ stories in her photos, while recording and sharing these stories and pictures with the world. So then began the journey, Eliana went to Mexico and began the conquest of an immigrant. Eliana walked miles, rode trains and snuck through cities just to get the feeling that these immigrants felt. While on this conquest Eliana took pictures and recorded the hardships of many people.
To create art from this journey Eliana used photojournalism, or using one photo to tell a whole story. Usually these photographs are taken in action or while the subject is doing what the story is telling. Then after the photographer journals a story he or she picks out the photo that best describes the story. Many of Eliana’s other immigration photos in this project were also photojournalism or street photography. The many stories that are attached to these photos are about real people and real events. -CW

To help guide your thoughts while responding, here are two questions to consider:
Why would Eliana rish her life for photos?
Why didn't Eliana portray her own journey?

  1. I think Eliana risked her life so she could get the photos while it was happening and not create it. She wanted to show the problems immigrants have trying to get to America. The people in the photo were the ones living it every day. Eliana didn't portray her journey because she was telling their story and not hers.

  2. i think she did it to see how the others were living compared to her. And i think she was showing how hard it was for immigrants to get to America. technically she didn't potray her journey she was telling the story on how they were living and telling how they were trying to get to America as immigrants because it's really hard for them because there the a different race then we are and there not from where were from.

  3. I think that she risked her life to feel how the immigrants felt on there journey if she didnt feel what they felt how is anyone else going to understand what she is trying to get across. She wouldn't potray herself bacuse she knows that it is not the truth that she isnt really having to do it. The people that she is taking pictures of have to do it to survive in the world. I dont think that she would be comfortable with taking "fake" pictures.

  4. She risked her life because she loved photography. It shows her dedication to catching real photos while in action. It was that enthusiasm and and adrenaline that makes her photography great.

She wanted to capture the true thing, somebody in a situation that she could photograpgh. Not really an everyday thing that people always see. She wanted to capture others perile, and the reality of life.

Her photography inspires people, as well as shows people what the real life of some people can be like. It's inspirational.

  5. i agree with CB3176 that if she didn't feel what they felt no one else was going to understand her photo's and get the true meaning she is portraying.

I agree with chasehofer that she was trying to capture what others lives were like instead of her own.

i agree with Ry that She wanted to capture others perile, and the reality of life.

  9. i think she risked her life to show how others were living and their journey to try to get to America and to capture photos as they were happening.
she didn't portray her journey because she was trying to show the life of others and not herself.
i agree with ry that her photos are inspirational.

  10. She risked her life because photography is her life. She wants to show with her photos how the immigrants feel on there way. She wants that everyone understands how they felt and the photos in action are the best way to present it.

She has not the same problems than immigrants have and she has no fears on a journey like them.
The immigrants she is taking pictures of have to go in a journey and often they loose their life, because it is hard and often dangerous for them.

  13. I agree with CB3176 that if she didn't feel the way the immigrants felt on their journey then people wouldn't understand her photography. I think she took pictures of other people in action because if they were of her then it wouldn't be real.

  14. She did the risk things to make her photos look interesting. And take the photo while it's in action so she gets the best shot.
    She also loves taking photos.

I think the reason that she didn't write anything to describe her pictures because her pictures can tell stories in themselves.

  16. I guess she spent her life taking photos of other, because this is what she loved. She loved to see what others go through and she wanted to share these emotions that came up in her. That was or still is her way to express her feelings and apply to the feelings of strangers.
During that she may risk her own life, but this is what is different about these pictures, they are real. She captured the moment and you can feel the adrenaline in the vanes of the young man and hear the sound of the train, because it’s so real.
And if you ask me, their journey is also her journey.
I agree with ds3112 that Ekiana risked here life so she could get the photo while it was happening and not create it.

  17. Eliana risked her life for photos because she wanted everyone to see the real thing immigrants go through. If she didn’t risk her life for that it just wouldn’t be the same and it most likely wouldn’t be as inspirational as it is now. I agree with ds3112 on how Eliana didn’t portray her own journey because she was telling their story, not her own.

  18. She risked her life because she wanted to see how the people migrating feel as they work towards their dream of America. She maybe didn’t portray her own journey because she didn’t want anyone to really know who she is and what she does. Eliana likes taking pictures that bring feelings because she wants people to think about the feelings and situations pictured. I like the point that ds3112 makes that Eliana is portraying the others’ stories instead of her own.

  20. I think that Eliana wanted to be known as a great photographer. She wanted people to see all of the differnet aspects of life that you can capture by doing things that you wouldnt normally do. Photography isnt just about how pretty something is and then taking a picture of it. Its more about the feeling that the photographer gets from it, and the image that they are conquering to show everyone. I think that she risked her life alot of the time so that others could see the different side of photography. She wanted to show them that you need to understand the things your taking photos of and by this image it looks like she wanted to mainly focus on what happened to the immigrants and to expierience a life that they had to expierience then taking photos of the tasks she did to show everyone else in the world a different side of life. I think that she didnt portray her own journey because she wanted to live someone elses journey. She wanted to see what she could learn from it.

And i agree with Ry because her photos are very inspriational and they have alot of meaning to them. They show you a different side of life and with her images you can feel what shes feeling.

  21. She didn't want to protray her own experience, she wanted to use someone else's experience. She showed it in a way where it would express heartache.

  22. Her photos also showed that she loved photography to a point hwere she wanted it to look as real as real could be, making it her 'job' to risk her life to show the realism in her photography.

I also agree with Ry, that it isn't an everyday thing to photography; becasue it isn't that often that you see someone doing that.
