Between 1904 and 1906, architect Antoni Gaudí was commissioned to remodel a nondescript building in Barcelona that became Casa Batlló. The façade of the building is mostly sandstone, but also incorporates other elements including ceramic tiles and recycled glass. This architectural masterpiece is sometimes referred to as the “House of Yawns,” and sometimes as the “House of Bones.”
Your job this week is to research and describe why Gaudí chose to remodel this building in an Expressionist Style. Explain why it received its nicknames, and whether or not you think it deserves either. Also explain why he took the time to remodel the building instead of designing an entirely new one like the patron originally wanted. Additionally, I would like you to consider the phrase “form follows function,” and describe how or if the phrase applies to Gaudí’s Casa Batlló. Finally, Gaudí also designed the interior of the structure, describe something that Gaudí did to the interior that you have never seen before, and try to explain what purpose it served.
You can find a plethora of pictures of the building online simply by entering Casa Batlló into a search engine, but be careful because the two buildings surrounding it were also important architectural pieces though they are not necessarily relevent to this blog post.

He thought that it would be a better house in the Expressionist style. It made it unique and a place people liked to look at. It had the nickname because the sandstone makes the building look like is is made out of bones. Not only the color but the shape. I don't think it really matters what the nick name is, it's still itself. It doesn't demean the building, it could actually add interest to the structure.
ReplyDeleteHe believed that it would mean more to remodel it, and would make it more amazing. Rebuilding it wouldn't have been as rewarding as making something wonderful out of something that already existed.
Casa Batllo: by Antoni Gaudi. 2003-2010, October 27, 2010. http://www.barcelona-tourist-guide.com/en/gaudi/casa-batllo.html
The columns look like bones, giving it its nickname the ‘house of bones’. I think that the nickname fits well. Gaudi maybe remodel instead because he didn’t want to spend a lot of time on the house. The house is brown in color. It has a lot of light.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ry that because it is made out of sandstone, it has the color and shape of human bones.

me personaly would love to live in a place like that. The architecture of the builtding just makes it fantastic. the color of the building even adds character. just like the statue of liberty.
ReplyDeleteI think he chose to remodel this building because it had potential and i think he saw somthing special about it and the design of it.I think the nicknames were right on when they were talking about this building. It does look like bones and skulls. The balconys are the skulls and the columns are bones. The building deserved all its nicknames. I agee with Ry when he said he remodeled it because it would make it more amazing and special. The form follow function works here cause the form of the house is what gave it its character. The coolest part of the house for me was at the top of the ceiling it twisted and turned and came together at the tip of the light. This added a lot of character and i have never seen in done before.

I agree with Ev3038, I would love to live in a house with such amazing architecture. It would be a gift worth a lot to me.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Lindsay the house had charator, even if some people refuse to see it. They just can't think creatively.
I agree with Ry that the outside looks like bones because of the shape and color. And also that it doesnt matter if it had a nickmame, I would remember the "house of bones" before I remember the real name or artist.
ReplyDeleteI think he remodeled the building because he wanted it to be different and stand out from the other buildings around it. He did it in expressionist style because he wanted people to search their feelings when they saw it. The nicknames fit because of the bone columns on the the front of it.
The interior of the building is just as cool as the outside because he used lines that didnt end. It is cool how all the hallways have curved arches and walls and there are columns shaped like bones like the outside of the house.

I agree with Lindsay, in the fact that when he saw this building he was potential and instead of starting over he chose to keep the original structure and build on the building's potential. The nicknames house of yawns and house of bones come from the apearance of the outside. The large oval openings give the appearance of a yawning mouth. The detail around the windows look like bones. Form folows function means the shape of the building associates with the reason it was built. In this case he built the building for someone else so form follows function.

ReplyDeletethe building look like is made by bone. It looks very remarkable.i thinks this name is good. He chose to remodel this building because he can make it interesting more than this one.

I agree with Ry that because it is made out of sandstone and makes the building look like is is made out of bones.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ry, the sandstone makes the building look like bones giving it the name, the house of bones. I think the name fits well. The enlarged windows gave it the name, the house of yawns. Gaudi convinced Batllo that he could keep the existing framework and remodel it to shock and delight the Barcelonians. I think Gaudi used form to help function. He created them simultaneuously by enlarging the windows to let in more light and air while also setting them at an angle to give a large curved window look. He used tiles in one of the rooms that started out white on the floor and gradually got darker as they rose to the skylight. This was so less light was reflected at the ceiling. I think this would make the rooms seem brighter at the floor and darker as you look upward.

It deserves the name 'House of bones' because when you look from outside it looks like the balconies are made of the skulls and the supporting pillars are made of the bones.
ReplyDeleteI think the reason he remodel this building because he wants to make it be difference and more interesting.
He also show his creative.

Gaudi chose to remodel this building in an Expressionist Style because it looks nicer and worthwile. It looks like bones and this gives this building the name " House of Bones ".
ReplyDeleteHe took the time to remodel the building instead of designing an entirely new one like, because he wanted to keep the old work.
Gaudi enlarged the windows to make more light in the house. ALso he used tiles. The detail around the windows look like bones too and act like dressing the house.

I agree with Lindsay that the coolest part of the house is the top of the ceiling that twisted and turned and came together at the tip of the light. I think it's very creative. And it's also beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Pear that he remodel this building to make it more interesting and that he wanted to show he creative. I also agree with ds3112 that he remodeled the building because he wanted it to be different and stand out from the other buildings around it.
ReplyDeletefrom the outside house of bones looks like it had been made from skulls and bones.it look interested.it had name because the sanstone made from the bones included shape and color.
ReplyDeleteHe believed that it would mean more to remodel it. he remodel the builting because he want to make more interesting.
i agree with praewa that it deserve name house of bones because it made from bones. and he remodel because he show his creative.

Antoni Gaudi was a child from a smith family, where he saw how to make new thinks out of all kinds of shapes. Unfortunately he stuffed many times from his rheumatic fevers, so that he was alone. But he used that time to observe the nature. These two aspects emboss his later work. Why it got its name it pretty easy to explain- because the bars in front of the windows look like bones (but if you look very, very close you’ll see that they are not supposed to be bones). Remarkable are the windows themselves, because they are irregular. Maybe this is what he saw in the nature- that the shapes are nor perfectly round/rectangles/… and so he included this as well as the natural materials in his artwork. Even the color of the house is kind of natural in light blue to green colors. Equally is the inside with irregular doors and walls.
ReplyDeleteAfter all the outside wall should show the Holy Georg (a Patron Saint of Spain) and the roof shows a dragon, which had a fight with Georg (but it seems that the dragon has a sward in his bag, so that the holy Georg won the fight).
And I agree with Ry that the Sandstone was an other poit that makes it look like its made of bones

I think Gaudi chose to remodel this building because he was the type of person that wanted to be remembered and he wanted to be the best, plus he wanted to keep the architecture of the building. The reasoning behind the nicknames was because of some features of the pillars and windows that represented skulls and bones. I understand the names but in my opinion the building was anything but a house of yawns. The design and architecture was amazing and extraordinary. With the exterior that I thought was mind blowing was that he took the attic and made it like oval shaped to where the pillars are slanted then come over to the other side of the room.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.havetravelfun.com/spain/barcelona/gaudi-information.htm
He probably wanted to express what he felt. The pillars aren't suppose to be bones. The nickname was made because people thought that the structure represented bones. He probably didn't want to get rid of the building so he just remodeled it. The doors and windows are odd looking.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.gaudiclub.com/ingles/i_vida/batllo2.asp
He chose to use the Expressionist style because he wanted his work to be energetic and he didn't want it to represent an era, he wanted its style to be timeless, different and memorable. The house did have a function considering that Gaudi made everything in the house wheelchair accessible for one of the residents. http://www.gaudiallgaudi.com/AA012.htm
ReplyDeleteIt seems that Gaudi avoided straight lines completely in his remodel of this house. It is nicknamed the House of Bones and the house does have a skeletal quality. I think this is a good nickname for the house. He wanted the house to have old historic architecture. Form follows function applies to Casa Batllo because the different shaped forms of the building still allow for the functions needed for the house. He installed curved staircases and ceilings, which gave the house a very unique look inside also. This saved space in the home for other purposes.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.ask.com/wiki/Casa_Batlló
I definately agree with Ry. Remodeling the house does give it alot more meaning than making a new constuction. I personally like old houses and historic architecture and this house is truly unique.
ReplyDeleteHe chose to remodel the building in an Expressionist style because he wanted it to be different from the other house, yet similar in other ways.
ReplyDeleteIt received its nickname ‘the house of bones’ because the color and the sandstone make the house look like bones, and the nickname ‘the house of yawns’ is because the windows are shaped like a person’s mouth while yawning.
I agree with Ry on how he took the time to remodel the building instead of designing an entirely new one like the patron originally wanted, because he thought it wouldn’t mean as much if he rebuilt it and designed it entirely different.

I'm not sure how I feel about this building. It looks like mold. I do like the way the window openings are not a geomtrical shape they are more organic looking. The balconies are the same way. This building I bleieve would look way more amazing in person. And some of the history you read about it is pretty good. Although I dont really like historic things.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.barcelona-tourist-guide.com/en/gaudi/casa-batllo.html
Maybe it is that he wanted to create something unique that he'd be remembered specially for. Maybe it's called "The House of Yawns" because parts look like a yawning mouth. And it sorta all goes together like bones and somewhat resembles a skeleton so i think those are good names for it. idk why he would remodel other than wanting to create something unique. the way he shaped windows and such gave the building its functions brilliantly. The interior is amazing because of the way it was designed.. the door ways are in different shapes and the ceiling seems to be twisted.
ReplyDeleteI think that he decided to use an expressionate style becuse it would be so unique that people would be very interested in it and want to know more about it. It would be more of a look at structure rather then other biuldings where poeple think their pretty but look away right away and dont care to know more about it. If a structure as this is different and unique it has more meaning to it. And the nickname i dont think really matters to others and the way it looks shouldnt resemble the nickname. It should just be what it stands for and thats it.. There shouldnt have to be a need of a nickname. As for the remodel i dont think it would be as interesting if he were to tear it down and build something new... by him building it off of what was already there meant that he worked even harder on it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with OV3004, you can see that he def wanted to express how he felt and his feelings toward this piece of art. It reall showed how he cared and his type of imagination is amaizng.
